Orthopaedic instruments, as the name suggests, work to fix broken bones or any deformity, for that matter. Fractures can only be handled with sturdy tools for repair and relocation. Simultaneously, they aid in realigning the bones for quick recovery. AzeeMed Instruments works in the capacity of a surgical supply store offering well-crafted surgical kits for managing various bone-related traumas.

In this AzeeMed guide, we will learn about essential orthopaedic instruments, which help facilitate the handling of broken bones for fracture management. Stay tuned!

How are AzeeMed’s Premium Orthopaedic Instruments an Absolute Game Changer?

Injuries to the bone require a significant duration to recover. These trauma operations require repairing, stabilising, and realigning the misaligned bones. AzeeMed Instruments provides a complete selection of necessary instruments for handling bone fractures. These surgical tools are made from high-quality stainless steel to avoid any rust development. Additionally, all instruments are designed to be robust to prevent any accidents during the procedure.

Management of bone fractures includes external fixation, internal fixation, and bone grafting. These procedures require the utilisation of specific surgical tools.

Here is a summary of essential orthopaedic tools that must be included in your surgical kit for managing bone fractures:

Tools for Cutting Bone

Bone fracture treatment requires severing bones for repositioning. Therefore, this phase requires sturdy surgical instruments to exert maximum pressure and force. Furthermore, these instruments help generate room for new implants or contour the bones if the edges are rough and pointed.

The primary tools for cutting bones include the following. Note these:

  • Skeleton cutters

  • Bone Cutting Pliers

  • Osteotomes and similar tools.

Bone Reduction Forceps

Fracture alignment must be performed using bone reduction forceps. Therefore, these forceps help maintain the alignment of the bone fragments. Throughout the alignment process, it is essential to hold the fragments steady and restrict their movement. It is crucial to maintain the position of the bone fragments before or during plate or screw stabilisation.

Many of these instruments feature wire/screw guidance and tissue safeguarding, rendering them non-traumatic. For example, there are small bone reduction forceps that help with Distal Radius Fractures and Mandibular Reduction, referring to fractures of the wrist and jaw, respectively.

Bone Grasping Forceps

Joint reconstruction and bone fracture management both require the immobilisation of the fragments. Their unique design features serrated jaws to maintain a firm grip on the bones. These surgical instruments are highly vital to avoid any unexpected slipping. Additionally, it assists in the precise alignment and placement of the shattered pieces.

After the bones are stabilised, the surgeons can proceed with internal and external fixation. An example of a frequently used bone holding forcep is the Lowman Bone Clamp. This clamp has two prongs which exert pressure and control the bone. Resultantly, the risk of bone fractures during handling is minimised.

Bone Hooks

Primarily, bone hooks serve procedures such as joint replacement, fracture repair, and bone repositioning. Furthermore, they assist in holding and retracting tissues to maintain a clear and unobstructed surgical area. Mostly, these hooks feature pointed tips for enhanced gripping performance. Sometimes, bone hooks can also aid in adjusting specific bone pieces.

Orthopaedic Hand Drill

In surgical procedures such as implant placement and fracture stabilisation, orthopaedic surgeons must create holes in the bones. These drills are portable devices that operate using electricity. Surgeons use the openings to place implants, nails, screws, and plates to stabilise the bones and their fragments. These instruments also help in remodelling bones for a more refined prosthetic look.

Orthopedic Plates

These plates are uniquely engineered support devices to rectify deformities. These plates are constructed from biocompatible material to avoid infections and accelerate the healing process. These plates can be fixed in place with the broken bone pieces using screws and nails.

After the bone has been stabilised, the plates may be removed. Additionally, they are utilised in the stabilisation of improperly aligned bone structures. Orthopaedic plates are available in various sizes and configurations. Certain aids are involved in carrying out compression. Some are great for connecting spaces created between the bones.

Orthopedic Rongeurs

These are skilful surgical tools for clipping away the pieces, where necessary. Shaped like a pair of pliers, they function to remove and chip away the bony pieces from nearby regions. They are also great for digging into the bones. Kerrison Thin Foot Plate serves as an example of an orthopaedic rongeur. They perform optimally in proximity to surgical areas, like the spinal cord.

Orthopedic Gouges

In certain orthopaedic surgeries, doctors might have to remove the bone tissue. For this purpose, trough-shaped surgical tools called orthopaedic gouges are utilised. They are ideal for eliminating infected bone tissues and transplanting bone.

In addition to these orthopaedic tools, our orthopaedic kit for managing bone fractures includes intramedullary nails, screws, wires, and clamps, among others.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

Q1: Is it possible to reuse orthopaedic instruments after fixing a bone fracture?

Certainly, all our orthopaedic tools can be reused following bone fracture fixation or any other procedure. Nonetheless, there exists a suitable guideline. After each use, it is essential to clean and sterilise the equipment that was used. Orthopaedic tools contain hooks, hinges, and locks. A microbrush is required for their cleaning.

Q2: What is the correct way to care for orthopaedic instruments?

Sterilised orthopaedic instruments should be stored in an appropriate box. Sterilisation follows specific procedures. They ought to be adhered to both in detail and intention. Each package from our facility includes a comprehensive instruction manual.

Technicians may choose between steam sterilisation and autoclaving. The selection of the method relies on the cleaner. Nevertheless, taking into account the recent advancements, technicians are opting for ultrasonic cleaning as well.
